This is the second article in a series I am writing about work dogs. I hope my readers will enjoy this article and come to appreciate this great breed of dog.
The Saint Bernard is one of my favorite dogs, although I have never owned one. As most people can imagine, this breed was originally used to find lost people in freezing and snowbound conditions. Nowadays, this dog uses its intelligence and strength in competitions, to draw carts, and to pull other heavy objects. The Saint Bernard is also known for its gentle nature and even dignified temperament.
Originally, it is thought that the Saint Bernard was bred from dogs that originally lived in the Swiss countryside. When first bred, this dog assisted travelers going through the Alps between Italy and Switzerland. They worked in the Hospice, which was a refuge for travelers. They served as guard, carting, and avalanche dogs who rescued travelers trapped in the snow.
There are several theories as to how this breed developed. It is probable that its first ancestors were descendants of dogs native to the Swiss region that bred with dogs brought by the Romans on their conquests. In the early centuries, the dogs were used for herding, guarding, and drafting. By 1050 AD, the dogs were well established.
As noted, the dogs were used in Hospice. It is estimated during this time that the dogs saved over 2,000 human lives. Later, in the early 18th century the dogs re-appeared. They were still well known for rescue work in the Alps. They had a strong instinct for survival in extreme conditions. Although modern means of transportation, such as the railroad, have lessened the need for the dog to perform rescue the Saint Bernard still remains popular. The dog still works in Alpine dairies and farms, as well as being a companion to the monks who still work in that part of the world.
This dog is popular in the United States, too. It has a very gentle nature and makes an ideal family pet. It is good around children and can be counted on to protect family and property. It has a massive size which would frighten away any would-be intruder.
The dog has a long and dignified history. We can see how the breed developed from earliest times. Its ancestors were part of the native breed that inhabited the Alpine region. The dog throughout its history has served humans well in bringing them to safety. You can see how this dog would benefit any owner. It certainly is an interesting breed and is one of my favorites.
